Forged from ancient volcanoes and sculpted by glaciers from the Ice Age, the mountains and lakes of the Lake District are the result of millions of years of geological history.

Now they are just waiting to be enjoyed by those of us who can appreciate the ruggedness and beauty of this unique landscape, with sheep roaming the fells and ravens patrolling the skies.

The Lake District became popular as a holiday destination during Victorian times. Today, "the Lakes" are available to anyone with an interest in walking, boating, cycling, fishing, sight-seeing or just relaxing amongst the magnificent scenery.

The Lake District is quite compact and easy to get to, yet offers good mountain walks but without the daunting wilderness and isolation of Scotland. In the Lakes, you are never too far from a pub!
